UPCOMING: BGSS 2019: Blue Growth Summer School, 9-20 September 2019, Ostend, Belgium

COASTAL will be also discussed at the Blue Growth Summer School in September at Ghent University. BGSS 2019 combines science, business development and entre-preneurship through lectures and interactive sessions, topped off with excursions and socio-cultural activities. Subscription is open until 19 August 2019.

What are the current and upcoming activities in COASTAL?

The COASTAL partners are currently completing their second round of workshops with selected stakeholders representing the land- and sea-based economic  operators, stakeholders and administrations.  

International Symposium on Sea Level Rise at GreenBridge

The International Symposium on Sea Level Rise in the Flemish-Dutch Delta was hosted by GreeenBridge on the 26 June 2019 where during the poster session the interested audience was informed oraly about the COASTAL project. 

COASTAL: Evidence-based co-creation towards land-sea synergy

Why do certain businesses fail and others not under similar circumstances?  Why do some management strategies work in the short term, but not in the long term?  Although the human brain can provide part of the answer, digging deeper into the “why?” of these questions becomes more difficult when multiple factors play a role.

SINTEF consults merging stakeholder mindmaps in MAL5

June 11th-14th  2019, the SINTEF team colleagues (Sepideh Jafarzadeh, Andreas Misund and Magnus Myhre) went to Romania to collaborate with the Romanian partners in the development of Causal Look Diagrams (CLDs) based on the mindmaps created together with stakeholders in Romania in 2018.


COASTAL was presented by IRSTEA at the International Interdisciplinary Conference on Land Use and Water Quality (LuWQ2019) held in Aarhus Denmark on 3-6 June 2019.

MAL1: Belgian Coastal Zone Case study

On May 23, 2019 the local partners and selected stakeholders for Belgian Multi-Actor Lab met again at the premises of the Flemish Land Agency in Bruges.

Deliverable D9  Inventory of Business Opportunities & Policy Alternatives

D9 as a first deliverable of WP3 is an EU-wide inventory and screening of ‘best practices, successes and lessons learned’ from twelve study regions other than the COASTAL case studies in order to create an inventory of innovative and inspiring examples.

GreenBridge presents COASTAL

The COASTAL project was presented at GreenBridge to the association of Flemish academics (VVA) on 30 March 2019, and to a delegation of the KENT Council (UK)  on 21 May 2019.


COASTAL coordinator Jean-Luc de Kok was invited to the project meeting of the H2020 fellow project ROBUST (20-22 May 2019, Helsinki) to present COASTAL progress and discuss strategy for cooperation between the two projects.


Sectorial workshops were held in the Charente River Basin in order to discuss key issues, interactions and variables that have emerged during the first round of sectorial workshops.

COASTAL at the AAG 2019

COASTAL flyers were distributed by Geonardo at the the American Association of Geographers annual meeting that was held April 3-7, 2019, in Washington, DC.


Georgia Destouni from Stockholm Universtiy presented COASTAL at the 2019 General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union between 7-12 April 2019 in Vienna, Austria.

Capturing the underlying dynamics of sector workshops: SINTEF consultation at IRSTEA

Members of the SINTEF team (Sepideh Jafarzadeh and Magnus Myhre) travelled to Bordeaux, France the 26th of February to have a workshop with representatives from partner IRSTEA for three days. During the meeting, all the stakeholder workshops from the French case area were condensed into causal loop diagrams, with overlapping variables from the workshops highlighted and later used to merge the workshop CLDs into a comprehensive case study diagram that included all the workshop results. 

MAL 5: Danube’s Delta Study Case

The Research Institute for the Economy of Agriculture and Rural Development (ICEADR) organized at the beginning of this year three rural workshops, one at national level and others two, at local level.

COASTAL Workshop in ICRE8 Athens

MAL workshops in Romania

The National Institute for Marine Research and Development “Grigore Antipa” of Constanta marks the celebration of the International Black Sea Day by organizing three workshops, on 30 and 31 October 2018, in the framework of the European Horizon 2020 Project COASTAL (Collaborative Land-Sea Integration Platformea), with the themes “Blue Growth”, “Fisheries and aquaculture” and “Tourism”.

Co-Creating Solutions for Innovation

COASTAL project coordinator, Jean-Luc De Kok attended the kick-off meeting of the H2020 co-funded project WASTE FEW ULL on 12 October at Bath University (UK), and gave a presentation on the COASTAL approach.  

COASTAL teams up with OceanGov European COST Action

COASTAL WP1 Leader, Senior Research Scientist Rachel Tiller from SINTEF Ocean is the Norwegian representative to the management committee of the OceanGov: Ocean Governance for Sustainability – Challenges, Options and the Role of Science COST Action help liaising between the two projects.

COASTAL collaborates with fellow project financed under topic RUR-01-2016: ROBUST

Co-operation activities are envisaged in the RUR-01-2016 topic. Contacts with the ROBUST project (Rural-Urban Outlooks: Unlocking Synergies) consortium have been established.

COASTAL Kick-off in Brussels

29 partners from 9 European countries came together in Brussels between 5 and 8 June 2018 to mark the start of the four-year research project COASTAL: Collaborative Land Sea Integration Platform.
